The tour itinerary: B=breakfast, L=lunch, D=dinner, N=overnight
Day01 Arrive Kathmandu, Nepal (D) Arrive in Kathmandu and transfer to our centrally located hotel. The rest of the day is free to explore this historic and vibrant city.
Day02 Kathmandu(B + L + D) Today, we explore the old city of Kathmandu, and visit Swayambhunath, an ancient stupa sacred to Hindus and Buddhists. We also visit the sacred river site, Pashupatinath, the majestic Tibetan stupa at Boudhanath, and Kathmandu's famous Durbar Square.
Day03 Kathmandu Valley (B + L + D) A day-trip out of town to visit some of the remarkable sites in the Kathmandu Valley. Highlights include a visit to Changu Narayan, and the beautiful medieval city of Bhaktapur.
Day04 Kathmandu/ Zhangmu ((B + L + D) In the morning, (after being joined by those who have just completed the Nepal itinerary of our Nepal/Tibet Combination trip) we begin driving overland north from Kathmandu to Tibet. Along the way, breathtaking vistas capture the eye as Nepalis work their steep terraces against the backdrop of snow-capped peaks. Approaching Nepal's northern border, we begin our ascent to the high altitude Tibetan plateau. After stopping short of the frontier with Tibet, we continue uphill on foot for one and a half-hours (with porters) to reach the border town of Zhangmu (altitude 2,500 m.). Here we formally clear Chinese immigration, and then spend the night in a Chinese hotel.
Day05: Zhangmu/ Xegar (B + L + D) Continuing our ascent to the world's highest plateau we drive to Xegar at an altitude of 4,350 meters. On the way we cross the Nyalamu Pass (3,800 m.) and the Lalungla Pass (5,050 m.), both of which (weather permitting) offer breathtaking panoramas of the Himalayan range. In the afternoon we reach Xegar, a town set at the base of mighty Mt. Everest. From here many mountaineering expeditions to the summit begin. We overnight in Xegar.
Day06 Xegar/ Shigatse (B + L + D) Our dramatic crossing of the plateau continues as we cross the highest mountain pass on our journey to Lhasa, the Gyatchu La Pass, at 5,220 meters above sea level. The dramatic scenery continues with vast fields of yellow canola stretching to a horizon filled with snow-capped peaks. We stay overnight at Shigatse (3,900 m.).
Day07 Shigaste/ Gyantse (B + L + D) In the morning we explore the fantastic Tashilhunpo Monastery in Xigatse, the official residence of the Panchen Lama and home to over 700 monks. In the afternoon we drive 55 miles to Gyantse where we visit the impressive Phalkor Monastery, unique for comprising of 16 monasteries of different sects. We also visit the Kumbun Pagoda, one of the largest and holiest pagodas in Tibet. We overnight in Gyantse (3,650 m).
Day08 Gyantse/ Lhasa (B + L + D) In the morning, we begin the spectacular drive from Gyantse to Lhasa, crossing the holy Braha Putra River and two high mountain passes. By mid-day we reach the turquoise blue waters of Yamdrok Lake, set against the background of snowcapped mountains, before carrying on to Lhasa in the afternoon.
Day09 Lhasa sightseeing (B + L + D) Visit Potola Palace, Johkang temple, and Barkor Market ,overnight at Lhasa. Day10 Lhasa sightseeing (B + L + D) Visit Drepung Monastery, Sera Monastery and Norbulingka, overnight at Lhasa.
Day11 Lhasa/ Tsedang (B + L + D) In the morning we depart from Lhasa to Tsedang, a small city in the Yarlung Valley considered the cradle of Tibetan culture. On our way to Tsedang, we cross the Yarlung Tsampo River and explore Tibet's earliest monastery, Samye. We overnight in Tsedang.
Day12 Tsedang (B + L + D) A full day of exploring in Tsedang introduces us to the old earth tombs of former kings, the Thandruk Monastery, and Tibet's oldest building, Yambu Lakang, a fort perched high in the mountains overlooking the vast plain. We overnight again in Tsedang.
Day13 Tsedang/ Airport (B) Our early morning drive takes us to Lhasa's Gonggar airport, end of the trip.
