Amdo Jampas,a great Tibetan painter almost ninety years old living in the Potala Palace, experienced all Tibetan history vicissitudes for a century and produced aboundant paintings through his legendary life that witnesses all key moments and celebrities in the history.
He entered into religion from a child,had upstanding religious culture background. He ever worked as the aulic painter for the 14th Dalai Lama,and personally experienced the days before the collapse of Lama Kingdom.
As the first painter with unique character and modern consciousness, his influence on the Tibetan art is unequalled.He is regarded as the Tibetan Picasso and also the artistic god in the heart of the Tibetan people, both he and his works were worshiped by the Tibetan people reverently. He produced innumerable everlasting works in the temples at Lhasa, Shigatse.
He Was once the past chairman of the Tibetan painters' association in new China.
His legendary story, splendent works, and strong vitality are not only the pride of Tibetan people, butalso the treasure of the human being.

The seriies is composed of 13 independent storied as follows:
1. "The Prime Buddhism Light"
"Norbu Linka" Palace means Baby's Garden, It locates at the west suburb of Holy Land Lhasa, was the summer palace of Dalai Lama for many generations in the Tibetan history. In early 50s',the 14th Dalai Lama rebuilt it ,and repainted many delicate frescos.One of them portrayed the story of Sakyamuni, who was imparting the Buddhism tenet to his five disciples first time after he realized the Buddhism.The painting 's title is "The Prime Buddhism Light"and was hung on the wall of Dalai's bedroom.It has luster color and represents a kind of splendid and classic style.Today,it has become the rarest one among mumerous history treasures in "Norbu Linka"Palace.It is the magnum opus of the great painter Amdo Jampas, who is 88 years old now.Facing the fresco,he recalled his past years.

2.The Flame of Life
Potala Palace is an architecture wonder in human history and harmonizes with the nature perfectly. The red and white two palaces symbolize the mundane power and spiritual immutability.There is a small two-stories building under the towering Potala Palace wall.Amdo Jampas is living in it with his family,including his third wife Ajia SangJi,Sangji's mother, son and daughter of Amdo.

Amdo was 70 years old when he met AJia SangJi,their son Luodan is only 8 years old now.It is astonishing for the old man to keep so strong vitality in the cold and anoxic Tibet.

3.Portraits of the Century
Amdo Jampas was born in Jainca County,Qinghai Province in 1914.Tibet used to be divided into three zones in the history:the present Tibet municipality is called Tibet,which is also divided into frontal-Tibet Lhasa and back-Tibet Shigatse:The second zone is Amdo area,including Qinghai Province and northern Tibet;The third zone is Khams,including Sichuan Province.Gansu Province.Qinghai Province, Yunnan Province and east Tibet.
Amdo entered into religion when he was only 7 years old in hometown's Along Temple.He began to learn painting by himself since then.Regong region near his hometown was the most famoous artistic locality in Tibet.Tunka and sculpture There are fine and can be found all around Tibet.Such a religion artistic atmosphere would surely have great influence on him.But what authentically inspired him was a black-white phot he first saw in his 20s.The character in the photo was the 9th Banchan.Amdo was fascinated by the supernatural effect of photo that presents an object on the paper exactly, and he relapsed into deep ponder.
After consideration,the painter painted with mineral pigment on traditional Tibetan canvas,the outcome shaped the peculiar style of Amdo Jampas,which enabbled him unparalleled in Tibetan art circle.
Amdo Jampas protrayed lots of characters in hundred years' Tibetan history penetratingly,from 9th Banchan drawn in 29 years old to 17th Bamaga drawn in 86 years old .He ever worked as the aulic painter for both the 14th

Dalai Lama and Banchan,and personally experienced the days before the collapses of Lama Kingdom.He ever contacted with each person in his picture,so the images in his pictures are believable.His pictures serve as vivid material to know Tibet.His influence on the Tibetan art is unequalled.He is regarded as the 'Tibetan Picasso'and also the artistic god in the heart of the Tibetan people.Both he and his works were worshiped by the Tibetan people reverently.
4.Seeking Buddhism Tenet in Holy-Land
Amdo produced innumerable everlasting works in the temples all around Tibet.To seek the lost works of Amdo Jampas in the past half century,we accompanied him to travel around Tibet.
One day, we arrived ZeBang Temple,which is one of great temples in Lhasa and has equal reputation as Sela Temple,Gandan Temple.In the temple yard,Amdo Jampas shouted loudly:I am back.
60 years ago,28 years old Qiangba came to Lhasa to seek Buddhism tenet.The Zhebang Temple is the place where he devoted into.He followed a shman group named Guoma Zhacang.According to the custom of the group,Lama should add the word Amdo before their name to indicate their origin.
The name Amdo Jampas began to be knownsince then.There was another monk named Gengdu Qunper in the nearby village known for his preeminent eloquence.Amdo Jampas earned great reputation for his peerlessly dulcet paintings there.

5.The Old Dream in the Peach Garden
In the early 40s',Amdo Jampas was invited by Qusang Nunnery to paint fresco.The man who invited him was one of richest businessmen in Tibet named Sangducang.Sangducang was the main benefactor of Qusang Nunnery,who built a large yard beside the Nunnery.The building in the yard were quite fashionable, and there were many luxuriant peach trees there.
The manager of the Nunnery Jampas Wangmu was danghter of a hereditary aristocrat family,and was a beautiful woman.The son of Sangducang, Siqula fell in love with her in the peach garden.But for Amdo Jampas,the maid of Jampas Wangmu,Qubusangba Pumu,was more beautiful than Jampas Wangmu. Amdo fell in love with Pumu in the peach garden too.After 60 years,when Amdo visited the peach garden again, the splendid house in lod days only left some collapsed walls.
6.Bakuo Libertine
Amdo Jampas secularized due to Sangqu love affair,and planned to marry Pumu.In the 40s',Lhasa was in downfallen situation of Lama Kingdom.When returned to Bakuo, he was devoured by the mundane dolcevita soon.But he still missed the beautiful girl in Qusang Nunnery.
Just then ,the known berserk monk Gengdun Qunpei returned from India.The two men spent happy life together everday.Gengdu Qunpei asked Amdo:Why you five up such a happy life only for a girl.Since then Amdo forget his lover Pumu.
When visiting Bakuo today,Amdo still can point out the places he ever spent with Gengdun Qunpei.

7.Bodhisattva
The theme of Bodhisattva occupies an important status in Amdo Jampas's works. History fresco, human protrait and Bodhisattva are three main bodies in Ando's art life.He attaches the most feelings to Bodhisattva.
One time,when we were shooting a beautiful BVodhisattva he painted in 70s' in the temple,Amdo began to look in the Tibetan girl working as the interpreter.Then he walked to the wall, and erew out the image of the girl with right thumb,then a line of monk house on the background,which actually was ZheBang Temple.Amdo associated a beautiful girl with his belief perfectly, and remarked the procedure from ecstasy to nirvana vividly.
Looking at the painter's bald nail,I asked him:All the Bodhisattvas you produced are lifelike and have diversified modality,are there live prototype for each Bodhisattva?
Amdo Jampas smiled and told me:Each Bodhisattva he ever drawn has its live prototype,but was superb thaan the real ones.For example,no matter how perfect a women's chest is,It can not be copied factually to the Bodhisattva.He will draw the breasts of Bodhisattva at a higher position than the real women,so there will have no any sensual feeling.

8.Anecdotes in the Capital
In May 2001,Beijing, the Yanhuang Art Museum exhibited the tributes offered by Dalai and Banchan.Among those,there was a drawing of Chairman Mao in a frame of 4 kilograms of pure gold attracted everyone's sight.The painter is Amdo Jampas,who drew this painting for Dalai and Banchan'sjiint offering to Beijing in 1954.
At that time,Amdo Jampas also came to Beijing as a memeber of the visiting group.When he found a nude model in the Central Art Institute,he felt that his heart almost stopped beating and was firmly grasped by her body.So he applied to Dalai for further study in the institute.
Two months passed soon."I could not feel any better gains that before in the cloring methods.My works are not of western methods nor oriental ones.I get these by my own contiunous practices and efforts, so I am just my own teacher."
Amdo Jampas doesn't care about the traditional Lhasa artist guilds,because he is far from the limitation of lod rules.In some sense,he is the first modern artist with self-consciousness in the tibetan history.

9.Swift Changes of the World
After Amdo Jampas went back to Tibet, he left two precious works on the walls of Norbu Linka and became a disputable chief painter in the palace.Besides the Parlance Drawing referred above,Coronation Ceremony of the 14th Dalai Lama,occupied the whole wall of Zhadanmingjiu Temple.
We can say if a painter painted one of these two paintings in his/her life,he/she could get an improtant place in Tibet's painting genre.
At the time when he was on his top, Tibet Rebellion broke out.Though Dalai Lama invited him to India for several times, Amdo Jampas pretended to be sick and remained in Lhasa.

10.The Catastrophe of Cultural Revolution
During the Cultural Revolution, the painter had not suffered too much thanks to his contributions:He drew paintings for Chairman Mao and designed a monkey hill for Norbu Linka to make this summer papace to change it into a people's garden.
To our surprise,Amdo Jampas even drew a series of religious paintings secretly under the shelter of a rebelled cadre.
Today,we still can see some precious works of this great artist in the praying hall of the cadre who has become a named private entrepreneur.

11.Re-propagation of Buddha
In a sense,the history of Tibet is the history of the development of Buddisme.So Tibetans are used to say that the last Zanpu(local official)-Landama's Anti-Religion Movement was the watershed of history.The time before it is called as Pre-propagation Period and the time after itPost-propagation Period.Naturally,the period after 80s is called as Re-progagation Period,when China has been under great opening-up & reforms and making efforts to recover religions.
Amdo Qangba also gained great attentions again in 80s and became the chairman of Tibet artistsassociation and history researcher of Potala Palace.During this period,he created two widespread portraitures of Banchan.Besides,he also left a lot of drawings with Tibet scenes and shrines.
While disappointedly,the man in his top time had no chance to leave one painting which could be really handed over to the afterworld.

12.Bygones Before Eyes
Amdo Qangba has experienced the centurial history of tibet.In the ruined Xidi Temple,the old man sighed deeply as cities are developing rapidly but many precious things disappearing secretly.
While in the eyes of the old man 's folks and former wives with their children,what kind of character Amdo Qangba is?An old urchin free and sentimental for ever?

13.One End for All Ways
A companion of Amdo Jampas when he was young,who is now a renowned dignitary in Tibet,Awanduojiu once teased him,"you applied for three days'leave,but you've gone out of the temple for 60 years!"While another old man who was his roommate,Aduokezhu,has hardly went out of the temple during these decades.
When these three old men met together,they could not heop recalling their past.It's hard to comment on their lives,since we can't tell whose life is more splendid.Awanduowa thought that art had already sublimed Amdo Jampas's spirit.Aduokezhu also believed that different ways would come together in the end and life was only a process of practices.While in my shallow opinion,I appreciate Amdo Jampas more ,becaust he left the temple when he was young,tumbled for 60 years in the human society,and with all his works witnessed the centurial history of Tibet.The beauty created by him and love given by him is more of Buddhist beauty,heoping people from the mundane ecstasy to the spirit's nirvana.
